Dieter Blum

Cowboys

Blumʼs cowboy motifs are still very much anchored in our collective memory. Most of them were developed as advertising motifs on behalf of an American cigarette group. The famous red valleys in the state of Utah, which gently pass into the legendary plain on the Colorado River, served as the setting for the legendary shoots. Sensitive lyrics and poems about the life of cowboys in the wilderness flank the spectacular shots.
To date, Dieter Blum is the only German-born photographer who was allowed to photograph the brandʼs international campaign. Thanks to Blumʼs insistent and perfectly composed imagery, many of the motifs are now regarded as icons and stand-alone art motifs.
As the first photographer, Blum staged the cowboy as part of a community, rather than as lonely heroes – and thus, shaped a modern image of the cowboy, which is still valid today.
